My introduction to Yoga some 25 years ago, carried with it a sense of rehabilitation after I had broken my lower leg in half.
Before that there was no formal training, or at least nothing consistent in any discipline. I was a relatively coordinated but unfocused kid! But the idea of not being able to walk really gave me a sense of drive. Yoga gave me a pathway and until recently I leaned heavily on the physicality of Yoga as the all important. More to the point, there has always been a healing undercurrent to my movement practice.
Therefore while I do not like putting my back out, and I would definitely not choose to break a leg again, I do really value the journey by broken leg took me on and all I learned. I also really appreciate the limitations of having a bad back right now.
I know from experience that working through this is the best way to a speedy recovery, and I hope to inspire some of you to do the same with whatever ailments you have going on.
Working through an injury does not mean ‘No Pain, No Gain’
It means saying Hello to the body, including the painful bits and seeing what is possible to do in a Listening way. The body crying with strong sensation is the body saying listen to me listen to me.
So don’t lock it up and throw away the key. Be a good friend, check in and see what’s going on.
